There are two worldviews that govern my line of thinking. The first is a western scientific perspective. A curiosity to understand mechanism, to name and categorize, to innovate. The second is the pull toward relationship. A curiosity to understand the life around me, to care for the earth and people, to build community.
Sometimes these world views pair beautifully, like my ideal for what it will be like to be a physician. Or recycling plastic for building blocks (a real project that Tucson is trying out right now. Check it out: https://www.byfusion.com ) to reduce the need for extraction.
Other times I find these ideas in contradiction. For example: telescopes that are built on sacred mountain tops or solar panels requiring more mining sites to be opened.

I encounter these contradictions often when I am at work. One example of this is when I choose to help people travel to their families even though they tested positive for COVID. The scientific perspective is clear. You should not travel if you are sick, you hinder the wellbeing of your neighbors on the plane. But when families stand in front of me after I have explained this and say...
"please just help us get a taxi.
We have been traveling so long.
My baby will not eat until we are home.
We will wear 2 masks the whole time.
Please just help me with this one thing."
...I will not force them into a car to the isolation hotel and I will call a taxi.
My time at Casa Alitas has helped me grow in appreciation of the complexity of this life. Most things don't fit into the nice little boxes I want them to and so I continue to listen and ask questions. What worldviews govern you? What would you do in my situation?
On the fun side of things...
Enjoy some pictures of some exciting adventures in the rain and snow this week!
Monday it started raining on my morning ride so I arrived at work with soaked pants, mud splattered up the back of my coat, and a smile on my face.
Wednesday morning we woke up to snow in our back yard!
We took a retreat this weekend to snowy Pine Top with the Showalter family! The weekend has been full of games, playing in the snow, naps, reading, and the Lord of the Rings movies.
