A bride, a beach, and a book

Writer's picture: Jessie LandisJessie Landis

In the past two weeks I have traveled more than I have worked. Memorial day weekend I flew to Virginia to attend a wedding of 2 of my dear college friends and visit others in Harrisonburg. It was a wonderful weekend full of catching up, laughter, and dancing.

I came back to Tucson to work three days before heading south with my housemates and the Showalters for Rocky Point Beach in Puerto Peñasco Sonora Mexico. This was my first beach vacation in 21 years (the first being when I was 2 years old) so I was excited to see what all the hype was about. We floated on the salty water, got carried by the waves, and dove for frisbees in the shallows. I spent most of my time reading and napping in my hammock strung between the columns of the patio over looking the gulf of California. There is something really special about being removed from all normal responsibilities and just being present in a space.

On the beach I finished reading Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr and I cannot recommend it enough. It tracks the lives of 5 individuals, their stories woven across time and space. It’s one that made me laugh and cry, despair at the cruelty of people and ultimately had me smiling at just how uniquely beautiful it is to be human.
